This series comprises records pertaining to the American Lutheran Church (ALC) mission field in New Guinea. It includes correspondence, articles, mission reports, financial reports, personnel lists, bibliographies, essays, and printed minutes from approximately 1922-1968 with the majority of material dating from 1934-1958. The records represent matters involving ALC work in New Guinea, in fields under its administration, and assistance provided to fields administered by the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia (UELCA). Records created prior to 1930 are from when the New Guinea field was administered by the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Iowa and Other States (IOWA), a predecessor of the ALC. They were kept with ALC New Guinea records for continuity purposes. There is also material pertaining to the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Australia and the work it did in concert with the Iowa Synod and ALC to administer mission fields in New Guinea, of which the Germans had to relinquish control. Subject matter of these records includes the issue of administrative control of the Finschhafen Mission field after World War II, memorial tablets for New Guinea missionaries, the Foreign Mission Builder and Missionary Aviation Fellowship Programs, the ALC's Mission Auxiliary and aspects of its work supporting the New Guinea mission, ALC relationships with partner churches in former mission fields, the Rhenish and Neuendettelsau mission fields, financial reports for the ALC mission at Madang, and documents pertaining to transfer of the Madang field to the ALC from the Rhenish Mission Society. Of note, there are extensive missionary personnel lists providing information as to those who served in the New Guinea field. These lists are from approximately 1920-1968 and include personnel serving in ALC fields, Australian missionaries, and those serving with the Rhenish Mission Society.
